In Love with Photography

Timeless, psychologically dissecting photography. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
An unerring instinct for the subtlety of the moment! Süddeutsche Zeitung

IN LOVE WITH PHOTOGRAPHY is a unique treasure in the history of photography, waiting to be lifted from the archives of Volker Hinz, one of the most important and indefatigable photographers of our time. A treasure, amassed in almost 50 years by a passionate photographer of portraits and presented here for the first time. Volker Hinz photographed those who normally remain hidden behind their cameras. Whenever and wherever he encountered them: at work, at home, in public or private moments. This is how a unique collection of the most renowned photographers of the second half of the 20th and the early 21st centuries came about. A summit meeting of individuals who sustain humanity’s memory with their images. Peter-Matthias Gaede, GEO Editor-in-Chief of 20 years, has followed Volker Hinz’ work for a long time – and describes the restless life of a photographer who set out to discover for himself not only his profession but humanity as such. And became a fascinating modern classic in the process.

Peter-Matthias Gaede

studied social sciences at the University of Göttingen and attended the Henri Nannen School of journalism. He worked at the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper for three years before joining GEO magazine in 1983 as a reporter. From 1994 to 2014 he served as Editor-in-Chief, not just of GEO magazine but also as Editor-in-Chief and Editor of GEO WISSEN, GEOlino, GEO Specials and other GEO spin-offs. Gaede has received, among others, the Theodor Wolff Prize and the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize. He is on the board of the Körber Foundation, Reporters without Borders and, since 2014, UNICEF Germany, as well as being a member of the Akademie für Publizistik.

Volker Hinz

lives and breathes photography, his passion. At the age of just 20 he sold his first pictures, and as a 24-year-old he became director of Fotoagentur Sven Simon in Bonn, before joining Stern magazine in Hamburg in 1974. For 40 years he played a key role in shaping the visual aesthetic of the magazine. Hinz has created an extensive oeuvre and received many accolades. His work has been shown in 58 exhibitions to date. Many of his pictures are held in museum and private collections. IN LOVE WITH PHOTOGRAPHY is evidence that Volker Hinz must be counted among the major contemporary photographers.
