IN LOVE WITH PHOTOGRAPHY is a unique treasure in the history of photography, waiting to be lifted from the archives of Volker Hinz, one of the most important and indefatigable photographers of our time. A treasure, amassed in almost 50 years by a passionate photographer of portraits and presented here for the first time. Volker Hinz photographed those who normally remain hidden behind their cameras. Whenever and wherever he encountered them: at work, at home, in public or private moments. This is how a unique collection of the most renowned photographers of the second half of the 20th and the early 21st centuries came about. A summit meeting of individuals who sustain humanity’s memory with their images. Peter-Matthias Gaede, GEO Editor-in-Chief of 20 years, has followed Volker Hinz’ work for a long time – and describes the restless life of a photographer who set out to discover for himself not only his profession but humanity as such. And became a fascinating modern classic in the process.

Obituary for Volker Hinz

One of the greatest German photographers of recent decades is no longer with us: Volker Hinz passed away on 18 October at the age of 72 after a serious illness. Volker Hinz captured the protagonists of an entire era with his camera: politicians and business leaders, poets and thinkers, fashion designers and athletes, artists and, last but not least, the stars of photography. His portraits, taken between 1974 and 2012 on behalf of Stern magazine, but always following his own path, had an unmistakable originality. Hinz brought even the biggest celebrities down from their pedestals, drove out all their officialdom, emancipated them from the image they had created of themselves. His sense for small gestures, tell-tale facial expressions, telling details and fleeting moments captured in a flash made the images of the ‘gentle falcon’, the ‘boxer with velvet gloves’, the ‘quick-eyed observer’ and ‘all-rounder’ Hinz a sensual experience and an eternally fresh journey through recent history.

Volker Hinz was a man with a lifelong love of photography, brilliant in his craft, imaginative like no other in his visual expression. ‘In Love with Photography’ is therefore also the title of his last and most comprehensive book. Over 400 pages, it presents the entire panopticon of the international photography scene, portrayed by Volker Hinz with unmistakable diversity and sophistication.

It was an honour and an extraordinary pleasure for Edition Lammerhuber to conceive and publish this book with Volker Hinz in 2015. ‘In Love with Photography’ is a monumental ode to Volker Hinz. Peter-Matthias Gaede

Reviews

Süddeutsche Zeitung

What emerges is a unique panoptic of those who shaped 20th century image awareness and memory and furnished it with their pictures. Even they, masters of their profession, are photographed by Volker Hinz in revealing all-too-human moments. - Bernd Graff

Spiegel Online

This time he looked for subjects through which to declare his love for his profession. The result is In Love with Photography, a 424-page volume of 371 photographs. In these pages Volker Hinz gathers portraits of photographers - his invisible heroes, practically always hidden behind their cameras. The pictures from nearly 50 years show individuals who shaped our perception of the world with their images: Ansel Adams and Richard Avedon, F. C. Gundlach and Annie Leibovitz, Helmut Newton and Irving Penn.

VICE

02.12.2015: Collective memory had Volker Hinz labelled as the photographer of Stern magazine. And then he published In Love With Photography (Edition Lammerhuber, 2015), an awesome volume, a colossus weighing in at 4.5 kilogrammes, with 371 photographs, mainly portraits of colleagues that he admired, from Annie Leibowitz and Lee Miller to Helmut Newton, Ruth Bernard and Peter Lindbergh to Joel-Peter Witkin. Gathered over the last 40 years, these pictures bring out the other side of the photojournalist: Hinz the artist, ardent fan of the greats. - Mathis Vogel

Hamburger Abendblatt

17.12.2015: "He has composed a book by a photographer for photographers. In his portraits Hinz catches the artist behind the viewfinder, and they often casually embody their style. Old masters like André Kertesz present themselves with classic dignity, a war correspondent like James Nachtwey has a completely different take on the world from those of lifestyle greats Richard Avedon, Jürgen Teller, Martin Parr or Helmut Newton. Candida Höfer sits as in a painting, Andy Warhol stands around in a New York Club like a drugged alien. Leni Riefenstahl feels caught out as a little old woman in an alcove. Hinz exploits the fine line between posing and sincerity with virtuosity."- Joachim Mischke
